Working Your Legs

Revised 11/27/06
Muscle Group Table of Contents

The upper leg muscles consist of the hamstrings in the back, analogous to the biceps in the arm in that they allow you to bend, and the quadriceps in the front (like the triceps) that allow you to straighten the legs back out. There are also the adductors on the inside.

The lower leg muscles consist primarly of the calf muscles on the back of the leg, technically the "gastrocnemius", (the "gastro" part meaning belly, not due to its location but its bulging shape). This muscle has two heads and along with the soleus, forms the leg triceps ("triceps surae complex"). This muscle pulls on the Archilles tendon and causes us to raise up on tip-toes. Since gravity is pretty good at lowering us back down, there isn't much muscle in the front, just the thin anterior tibialis located on the side.
