There are two major movements involving the chest,
the press and the fly. Many exercises also
involve the triceps, particularly any variation
of the press. (With a fly-type movement, the
angle of the arm is kept constant, sort of
like hugging a tree. Therefore the triceps
are not called upon to work.)
The bench press with a barbell would seem to be
the same as with dumbbells. However, as you
get to the top of the motion, the barbell
keeps your hands a fixed distance apart, so
it works the triceps more than using dumbbells,
but doesn't work the pecs as much.
Instead of a stable bench, you could do a
chest press on a swiss ball or other
unstable surface to work the stabilizer
muscles much more. (But if you do, make
sure your entire spine, particularly the
neck, is supported and doesn't hang off
the end.)
These are exercises where the chest muscles
are also worked, but aren't the primary
muscles used.
